Newscasting is a part-time gig for a sherbet seller who has entered the Rhode Island marketplace store-by-store and is now working to make his way into the New England consciousness one taste test at a time.
“It consumes you from the product end of it to the marketing end of it,” said Jim King, president and CEO of Warwick-based Gaga’s Inc. and former anchor at WPRI Channel 12. “From the time I wake up in the morning to the time I go to bed, it’s on my mind.” After a few months of refining the recipe for mass production, King began to move the product into independent market fronts, after home-delivery service Munroe Dairy gave him an initial order of 500 pints. From June, through the end of December, King sold more than 10,000 pints of Gaga’s Lemon “SherBetter.” And as King said, paraphrasing a friend, “If you sell 10,000 of anything, you’re in business.”
